Papercraft Pinhole Camera

papercraft pinhole camera

    pinhole camera
  • A pinhole camera is a simple camera without a lens and with a single small aperture -- effectively a light-proof box with a small hole in one side. Light from a scene passes through this single point and projects an inverted image on the opposite side of the box.

  • The most basic form of a camera in which no lens is used. A pinhole camera is made by making a lightight container and poking a pinhole in the front of the camera where a lens would go.

  • A camera with a pinhole aperture and no lens

  • A camera whose lens is covered except for a pin-sized hole. You have a very small aperture, so you have to shoot long exposures.

  • Paper models, also called card models or papercraft, are models constructed mainly from sheets of heavy paper, paperboard, or card stock.

Papercraft: Design and Art With Paper

An unparalleled collection of groundbreaking creations crafted from paper as a material for innovative
art and design.
Paper is arguably the most important material of our civilisation and has continued
to serve as a medium for documenting information and ideas. Today, paper is
enjoying something of a renaissance among young artists and designers worldwide
as an experimental material for design. There is also an insatiable concurrent
trend for designing three-dimensional handcrafted objects as documented
in the books Tangible, Tactile and Hidden Track.
Papercraft is an extensive and timely survey of innovative art and design work
crafted from paper. It explores the astounding possibilities of paper craft in all
shapes and sizes some are playful, whimsical and quick to produce while others
are far more intricate and created in painstaking detail. From the most basic
techniques including cutting, folding, gluing and collage to the use of cuttingedge
technology like embossing and laser cutting, paper and cardboard-crafted
works are reaching new artistic heights.
The book gathers the most extraordinary creations from small objects and figures
to large-scale art installations and urban interventions as well as three-dimensional
graphic sculptures from a vast spectrum of artistic disciplines ranging from
character design, urban art, fine art, graphic design, illustration, fashion, animation
and film. Adding even more value, this illustrated book also includes a DVD
with printable templates for creating your own paper characters and toys as well
as a curated selection of the best stop-motion animations.
This book provides a comprehensive insight into the enormous creative potential
of this multifaceted material and reveals how paper is firing up the imaginations
of today s designers and artists.

Papercraft 2: Design and Art With Paper

Paper is arguably the most influential material in human civilization. In our digital age, paper has become less important as a medium for the immediate transmission of information. As this shift occurred, designers and artists increasingly discovered the creative possibilities of paper s endurance. Today, designing with paper continues to be a trend. In the last three years, a broad range of creative disciplines including scenography, fashion design, and advertising have discovered the versatility of this basic material. These new areas have contributed fresh ideas and perfected existing techniques. The areas of application and forms of expression for working with paper have now reached an unforeseen breadth and level of quality. With an unparalleled collection of new and groundbreaking projects, Papercraft 2 presents current developments in contemporary design with paper and cardboard. The book documents how techniques such as cutting, folding, gluing, and collage help designers craft innovative communication design, products, and artwork from these materials that reach new creative heights. Recent examples include illustration, sculpture, and 3D graphic design
as well as complex spatial installations, fashion, and objets d art. Clearly advancing the handicraft used in earlier pieces, these are setting prevailing trends and inspiring the future evolution of work with paper in ever more creative disciplines. Its more than 250 pages and additional bonus video material make Papercraft 2 a comprehensive documentation of the creative potential that can be realized with the traits of what was once our primary material for communicating information.

'The Orton Effect' - My first attempt

'The Orton Effect' - My first attempt

The Orton Effect is named after Michael Orton who first used the technique is a sandwich of

two images, one in focus the other out of focus. Freeman Patterson and Andre Gallant have

both used the technique successfully in their work as well.

The Orton image has traditionally been done using slide film with the first, sharp, image

overexposed by two stops and the second, out of focus image, over exposed by one stop. It

is important to use a tripod for this type of work to ensure your photographic elements remain

in register on the film. The shots were then sandwiched together in single slide mount to

produce a beautiful, impressionistic image. We are beyond that now and with so many things

in the world of digital photography, we can now duplicate the same effect in multiple ways.

For purists, you can use the same technique as with film, two images, overexposed the same

way, and in your image editing program place your out of focus image on top of your in focus

image as a layer and choose multiply as your blending mode. Of course this means always

taking at least two images of your scene and always using a tripod. Another method is to use

a single image and create a layers which you can then blur and expose as required

There exist many tutorials on this subject and for Photoshoppers lots of actions.

Around flickr and elswhere there are some super examples of the process, sadly this isn't one

of them

Pieces 1/52

Pieces 1/52

I've had this idea for a while, so when the 'pieces' challenge came out I new exactly what I wanted to do. However this isn't it..... I actually wanted to use puzzle pieces instead of the mosaic texture that I actually used. Then the puzzle pieces would fall off my face. It was just two time consuming to create a puzzle texture in photoshop and I didn't want to steel someone else's texture. Perhaps next time someone I know completes a puzzle I can photograph it before they dismantle it.

Our Daily Challenge - Pieces

The Tech Info:
One light set up - Canon 580exII full power in brolly box camera left and slightly in front. Triggered with Cactus V4.

Photoshop mosaic texture:
Using the rendering clouds filter I created some clouds on a new layer. I then used the Texture Stained Glass filter to create a shaded mosaic tile effect (who would have thought I'd ever use that filter). The hardest and most crucial part was to make the mosaic look three dimensional. I used the liquify to shape the mosaic around my face. (Wish I had another subject... I'm sick of looking at myself.) After the mosaic was shaped I simply used the magic wand to select various parts of the mosaic to delete from my face. There are quite a few more steps that that but that is essentially what I did.

If anyone has any questions please feel free to fire away.
