'The Orton Effect' - My first attempt

'The Orton Effect' - My first attempt

The Orton Effect is named after Michael Orton who first used the technique is a sandwich of

two images, one in focus the other out of focus. Freeman Patterson and Andre Gallant have

both used the technique successfully in their work as well.

The Orton image has traditionally been done using slide film with the first, sharp, image

overexposed by two stops and the second, out of focus image, over exposed by one stop. It

is important to use a tripod for this type of work to ensure your photographic elements remain

in register on the film. The shots were then sandwiched together in single slide mount to

produce a beautiful, impressionistic image. We are beyond that now and with so many things

in the world of digital photography, we can now duplicate the same effect in multiple ways.

For purists, you can use the same technique as with film, two images, overexposed the same

way, and in your image editing program place your out of focus image on top of your in focus

image as a layer and choose multiply as your blending mode. Of course this means always

taking at least two images of your scene and always using a tripod. Another method is to use

a single image and create a layers which you can then blur and expose as required

There exist many tutorials on this subject and for Photoshoppers lots of actions.

Around flickr and elswhere there are some super examples of the process, sadly this isn't one

of them

Pieces 1/52

Pieces 1/52

I've had this idea for a while, so when the 'pieces' challenge came out I new exactly what I wanted to do. However this isn't it..... I actually wanted to use puzzle pieces instead of the mosaic texture that I actually used. Then the puzzle pieces would fall off my face. It was just two time consuming to create a puzzle texture in photoshop and I didn't want to steel someone else's texture. Perhaps next time someone I know completes a puzzle I can photograph it before they dismantle it.

Our Daily Challenge - Pieces

The Tech Info:
Strobist:
One light set up - Canon 580exII full power in brolly box camera left and slightly in front. Triggered with Cactus V4.

Photoshop mosaic texture:
Using the rendering clouds filter I created some clouds on a new layer. I then used the Texture Stained Glass filter to create a shaded mosaic tile effect (who would have thought I'd ever use that filter). The hardest and most crucial part was to make the mosaic look three dimensional. I used the liquify to shape the mosaic around my face. (Wish I had another subject... I'm sick of looking at myself.) After the mosaic was shaped I simply used the magic wand to select various parts of the mosaic to delete from my face. There are quite a few more steps that that but that is essentially what I did.

If anyone has any questions please feel free to fire away.
